What is a Capacitance Level Probe?
A capacitance level probe measures level from the change in capacitance as liquid replaces air between the probe and the tank wall.
Capacitance Level Probe Explained
The probe and the vessel wall form a capacitor. Liquid has a higher dielectric constant than air, so capacitance rises as level rises.
Calibration depends on the dielectric constant, so changes in product affect the reading. For conductive liquids, an insulated probe is used.
Capacitance Level Probe Formula
| ε₀ | 8.854 × 10⁻¹² F/m |
| L | covered length |
| D, d | outer and probe diameters (coaxial) |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Capacitance Level Probe?
A capacitance level probe measures level from the change in capacitance as liquid replaces air between the probe and the tank wall.
What is build up compensation?
Electronics that ignore a coating on the probe, so sticky products do not read as level.
Why does a tank shape matter?
Without a reference tube, the distance to the wall changes the capacitance per metre.
