Mass Flow to Volume Flow Calculator

Convert mass flow to volumetric flow, or the reverse, using the fluid density at flowing conditions.

kg/h to m³/hm³/h to kg/hDensityCoriolis to volume
Volume flow5.8824 m³/h
Volume flow98.039 L/min
Volume flow25.899 US gpm
How this result was calculated
  1. Q = ṁ ÷ ρ = 5,000 kg/h ÷ 850 = 5.8824 m³/h

Mass and Volume Flow

Q = ṁ ÷ ρ    ṁ = Q × ρ

Worked example

5000 kg/h of oil at 850 kg/m³ is 5000 ÷ 850 = 5.88 m³/h (98 L/min).

Key insight: liquid density changes with temperature (about 0.07 % per °C for oils), so a fixed density in the DCS gives a volume error when the process temperature moves. Coriolis meters measure density live.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert kg/h to m³/h?

Divide by the density in kg/m³. For water at 20 °C (998 kg/m³), 1000 kg/h is 1.002 m³/h.

Which density should I use?

The density at flowing pressure and temperature, not at reference conditions, unless you want reference volume.

Can I use this for gas?

Yes, with gas density at line conditions. Use the gas density calculator to find it.
