Formulas

ID = OD − 2t
Volume per metre = π ÷ 4 × ID²
Steel weight per metre = π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × ρsteel

Diameters in metres for the formulas; carbon steel density about 7850 kg/m³, stainless about 8000 kg/m³.

Worked example

4" Sch 40 (114.3 × 6.02 mm), 100 m: ID 102.26 mm, 8.21 L/m, 0.821 m³; steel 16.1 kg/m; full of water 24.3 kg/m.

Key insight: for hydro tests, add the volume of vessels, instruments and dead legs, and plan where the test water will drain.
