How to Convert Data Transfer Rate Units
Data transfer rate is the amount of data moved per second. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps), while file downloads usually show bytes per second (MB/s); 1 byte equals 8 bits.
Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the bit per second (bit/s). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:
- Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in bit/s.
- Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?
To convert megabit per second (Mbps) to megabyte per second (MB/s), multiply the value in Mbps by 0.125. For example, 1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s.
How do I convert MB/s to Mbps?
To convert megabyte per second (MB/s) to megabit per second (Mbps), multiply the value in MB/s by 8. For example, 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps.
How do I convert Gbps to Mbps?
To convert gigabit per second (Gbps) to megabit per second (Mbps), multiply the value in Gbps by 1,000. For example, 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps.
Can I see a value in every data transfer rate unit at once?
Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 14 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
