How to Convert Density Units

Density is mass per unit volume. The SI unit is kilogram per cubic metre (kg/m³); water at 4 °C is close to 1000 kg/m³, which equals 1 g/cm³ or about 62.43 lb/ft³.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the kilogram per cubic metre (kg/m³). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in kg/m³.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 1 gram per cubic centimetre to pound per cubic foot. Using lb/ft³ = g/cm³ × 62.428: 1 g/cm³ × 62.428 = 62.428 lb/ft³.
