How to Convert Frequency Units

Frequency is the number of cycles per unit time. The SI unit is the hertz (Hz = 1 cycle per second); power systems run at 50 or 60 Hz, and rotating machine speed can be expressed as cycles per minute.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the hertz (Hz). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in Hz.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 1 kilohertz to hertz. Using Hz = kHz × 1,000: 1 kHz × 1,000 = 1,000 Hz.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of frequency?

The SI unit of frequency is the hertz (Hz). Frequency is the number of cycles per unit time.

How do I convert Hz to rpm?

To convert hertz (Hz) to revolution per minute (rpm), multiply the value in Hz by 60. For example, 1 Hz = 60 rpm.

How do I convert kHz to Hz?

To convert kilohertz (kHz) to hertz (Hz), multiply the value in kHz by 1,000. For example, 1 kHz = 1,000 Hz.

How do I convert MHz to kHz?

To convert megahertz (MHz) to kilohertz (kHz), multiply the value in MHz by 1,000. For example, 1 MHz = 1,000 kHz.

Can I see a value in every frequency unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 10 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
