How to Convert Volume Units

Volume is the three dimensional space occupied by a substance. The SI unit is the cubic metre (m³), while the litre (exactly 0.001 m³) and US or UK gallons are common in industry and trade.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the cubic metre (m³). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in m³.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 10 gallon (us) to litre. Using L = gal × 3.78541: 10 gal × 3.78541 = 37.8541 L.
