How to Convert Power Units

Power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy. The SI unit is the watt (W = 1 J/s); motors are rated in kW or horsepower, and cooling equipment in BTU per hour or tons of refrigeration.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the watt (W). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in W.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 10 horsepower (mechanical) to kilowatt. Using kW = hp × 0.7457: 10 hp × 0.7457 = 7.457 kW.
