Dilution Equation

C1 × V1 = C2 × V2

C1 and V1 are the stock concentration and volume; C2 and V2 the final concentration and total volume. Both concentrations must be in the same unit.

Worked example

To make 500 mL of a 50 mg/L standard from 1000 mg/L stock: V1 = 50 × 500 ÷ 1000 = 25 mL of stock, made up to 500 mL.

Key insight: for large dilution factors, dilute in two steps (for example 1:20 then 1:50) to keep pipetting volumes accurate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use C1V1 = C2V2?

Enter any three of the values and solve for the fourth. Concentrations and volumes must use consistent units.

Is V2 the volume of water added?

No. V2 is the final total volume; the water added is V2 − V1.

Does this work for percent solutions?

Yes, as long as both concentrations are expressed the same way (for example both % w/v).
