Calibration Gas Dilution Calculator

Mix a span gas cylinder with zero gas (nitrogen or zero air) to make a lower calibration concentration, or find the flows needed to reach a target value.

Dilution Formula

Cmix = Cspan × Qspan ÷ (Qspan + Qzero)

Worked example

1000 ppm span gas at 0.2 L/min mixed with 1.8 L/min of nitrogen gives 100 ppm (1 : 10 dilution).

Key insight: the accuracy of the mix is only as good as the flow measurement; mass flow controllers or a certified gas divider are needed for audit grade calibrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I dilute a calibration gas?

Mix it with zero gas; the concentration falls in proportion to the span gas share of the total flow.

What zero gas should I use?

Nitrogen or zero air that is certified free of the measured component, matching the analyser background.

Why use a gas divider?

It produces accurate dilutions from one cylinder, saving multiple calibration cylinders.
