Encoder Pulse to RPM and Speed Calculator

Convert encoder pulses to shaft speed and conveyor speed, or check the pulse frequency a PLC high speed counter input must handle at maximum speed.

Shaft speed703.13 rpm
Counts per revolution1024
Linear speed at roller surface7.363 m/s (441.8 m/min)
Resolution0.3516° per count
How this result was calculated
  1. RPM = f × 60 ÷ (PPR × mode) = 12,000 × 60 ÷ 1024 = 703.13
  2. Surface speed = π × D × RPM ÷ 60

Encoder Formulas

RPM = f × 60 ÷ (PPR × counting mode)
f = RPM × PPR × mode ÷ 60
Linear speed = π × D × RPM ÷ 60

Worked example

A 1024 PPR encoder read ×1 at 12,000 Hz turns at 12000 × 60 ÷ 1024 = 703 rpm. With a 200 mm roller that is 7.36 m/s.

Key insight: quadrature (×4) counting gives four times the resolution but also four times the input frequency; check the counter limit at full speed before choosing ×4.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert encoder frequency to RPM?

RPM = frequency × 60 ÷ counts per revolution (PPR × counting mode).

What is ×4 quadrature counting?

Counting both edges of both A and B channels, giving 4 counts per encoder line.

What frequency does a 1000 PPR encoder give at 3000 rpm?

50 kHz in ×1 mode, 200 kHz in ×4 mode.
