pH Temperature Compensation Explained

Automatic compensation uses a temperature sensor in the probe. It corrects the Nernst slope only, not the real change in sample pH with temperature.

Some analysers add solution compensation for known samples such as pure water.

pH Temperature Compensation Formula

pH = 7 − E ÷ (0.1984 × T)
Eelectrode voltage (mV), offset corrected
Ttemperature (K)
Example: −118 mV at 25 °C: pH ≈ 7 + 2.0 = 9.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pH Temperature Compensation?

pH temperature compensation corrects the electrode slope for sample temperature, so the analyser converts mV to pH correctly.

Does compensation give pH at 25 °C?

Not by default; it gives the true pH at the sample temperature.

What if the temperature sensor fails?

The analyser uses a wrong slope; errors grow away from pH 7.
