What is a Pulse Output?

frequency or pulse per unitSignals and PLC

A pulse output sends one pulse per fixed quantity of flow, or a frequency proportional to flow, for accurate totalising.

Pulse Output Explained

The receiving counter or high speed input multiplies pulses by the pulse value. Frequency outputs scale a maximum frequency to maximum flow.

Pulse width and maximum frequency must suit the input; too fast pulses are missed by normal PLC inputs.

Pulse Output Formula

fmax = Qmax ÷ pulse value
Qmaxmaximum flow per second
pulse valuequantity per pulse
Example: 36 m³/h (0.01 m³/s) at 1 L per pulse: fmax = 10 Hz.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pulse Output?

A pulse output sends one pulse per fixed quantity of flow, or a frequency proportional to flow, for accurate totalising.

Pulse or 4 to 20 mA for totals?

Pulses, because the current signal adds scaling and sampling errors.

What is an open collector output?

A transistor switch that needs an external supply and pull up resistor.
