Reading the Designation

Size, threads per inch and series, for example 1/4"-20 UNC
Pitch (mm) = 25.4 ÷ TPI

TPI is threads per inch. Tap drills shown give about 75 % thread engagement, the common shop choice. Numbered and lettered drills are standard US drill sizes.

Worked example

1/4"-20 UNC: major diameter 0.250 in (6.35 mm), pitch 1.27 mm, tap drill #7 (0.201 in).

Key insight: a 1/4"-20 UNC bolt and an M6 bolt look similar but are not interchangeable; check the pitch with a thread gauge before forcing a fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1/4-20 UNC mean?

A 1/4 inch diameter coarse thread with 20 threads per inch.

When is UNF used?

Where finer adjustment or thin walls need more threads, and in some instrument and aerospace parts.

Are UNC and NPT the same?

No, NPT is a tapered pipe thread; UNC and UNF are straight fastener threads.
