How to Convert Heat Flux Density Units

Heat flux density is the rate of heat transfer per unit area. The SI unit is watt per square metre (W/m²); furnace, boiler and solar radiation calculations use it.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the watt per sq metre (W/m²). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in W/m².
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 1,000 btu per hour sq foot to watt per sq metre. Using W/m² = BTU/(h·ft²) × 3.15459: 1,000 BTU/(h·ft²) × 3.15459 = 3,154.59 W/m².

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of heat flux density?

The SI unit of heat flux density is the watt per sq metre (W/m²). Heat flux density is the rate of heat transfer per unit area.

How do I convert W/m² to BTU/(h·ft²)?

To convert watt per sq metre (W/m²) to btu per hour sq foot (BTU/(h·ft²)), multiply the value in W/m² by 0.316998. For example, 1 W/m² = 0.316998 BTU/(h·ft²).

How do I convert BTU/(h·ft²) to W/m²?

To convert btu per hour sq foot (BTU/(h·ft²)) to watt per sq metre (W/m²), multiply the value in BTU/(h·ft²) by 3.15459. For example, 1 BTU/(h·ft²) = 3.15459 W/m².

How do I convert kcal/(h·m²) to W/m²?

To convert kilocalorie per hour sq metre (kcal/(h·m²)) to watt per sq metre (W/m²), multiply the value in kcal/(h·m²) by 1.163. For example, 1 kcal/(h·m²) = 1.163 W/m².

Can I see a value in every heat flux density unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 9 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
