How to Convert Pressure Units

Pressure is force per unit area. The SI unit is the pascal (Pa = 1 N/m²); process plants commonly use bar, psi, kg/cm² and water column units for low pressures and differential pressure transmitters. Water and mercury column units here use conventional (standard gravity) definitions.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the pascal (Pa). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in Pa.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 10 bar to pound force per sq inch. Using psi = bar × 14.5038: 10 bar × 14.5038 = 145.038 psi.
