3 Wire RTD vs 4 Wire RTD
Side by side comparison: how they work, where each fits, and which to choose.
Quick answer: 3 wire RTDs cancel lead resistance if all leads are equal and are standard in plants; 4 wire RTDs remove lead effects completely for precision work.
3 Wire RTD vs 4 Wire RTD: Comparison Table
| Aspect | 3 Wire RTD | 4 Wire RTD |
|---|---|---|
| Lead compensation | Good if leads match | Complete |
| Typical use | Field RTDs to transmitters | Laboratory, calibration, long runs |
| Cable | 3 cores | 4 cores |
| Error from lead mismatch | Possible | None |
| 2 wire comparison | Much better | Much better |
Choose 3 Wire RTD when
- Normal process RTDs with head or field transmitters
Choose 4 Wire RTD when
- Reference thermometers, high accuracy, long or unequal leads
Key Differences Explained
In a 2 wire circuit the lead resistance adds directly: 0.34 Ω of copper adds about 0.9 °C on a Pt100. A 3 wire bridge subtracts one lead from the other. A 4 wire circuit drives current on two wires and measures voltage on the other two, where almost no current flows.
Head mount transmitters keep leads short, so 3 wire is usually enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 3 Wire RTD and 4 Wire RTD?
3 wire RTDs cancel lead resistance if all leads are equal and are standard in plants; 4 wire RTDs remove lead effects completely for precision work.
Can I use a 4 wire sensor on a 3 wire input?
Yes, leave one lead unconnected.
Why do 3 wire leads need to be equal?
The method assumes the two current carrying leads have the same resistance.
Is 2 wire ever acceptable?
With Pt1000 or very short leads, or where errors of a degree do not matter.
