What is a Guard Band?

tightened acceptance limitCalibration

A guard band tightens the acceptance limit inside the tolerance to allow for calibration uncertainty, reducing the risk of a false pass.

Guard Band Explained

If a reading falls just inside tolerance, the true value may be outside because of uncertainty. Subtracting a guard band from the tolerance makes the decision safer.

ILAC G8 describes decision rules; the simplest guard band equals the expanded uncertainty.

Guard Band Formula

Acceptance limit = Tolerance − w   (often w = U)
wguard band width
Uexpanded uncertainty
Example: Tolerance ± 0.25 %, U = 0.08 %: accept only within ± 0.17 %.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Guard Band?

A guard band tightens the acceptance limit inside the tolerance to allow for calibration uncertainty, reducing the risk of a false pass.

Does a guard band cause more failures?

Yes, slightly more instruments fail, in return for fewer bad instruments passing.

Must certificates use guard bands?

ISO/IEC 17025 requires the decision rule to be agreed and stated when conformity is reported.
