What is Stroke Time?
Stroke time is the time a valve takes to move from fully open to fully closed, or the reverse, after a command.
Stroke Time Explained
For shutdown valves, stroke time must be shorter than the process safety time allows. For control valves it affects how fast the loop can respond.
Stroke time depends on actuator volume, supply pressure, tubing and the flow capacity of solenoids, positioners, boosters and quick exhausts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Stroke Time?
Stroke time is the time a valve takes to move from fully open to fully closed, or the reverse, after a command.
How is stroke time measured?
From command to limit switch, or from trend data, during a full stroke test.
Why does a valve close slower over time?
Blocked exhaust ports, sticky packing or failing solenoids. Trending stroke times reveals degradation.
