About the ESD Valve Full Stroke Test Report

Shutdown valves sit still for months and must move instantly when demanded. Under IEC 61511, every safety instrumented function must be proof tested at the interval assumed in its SIL calculation, and the final element is usually the least reliable part. A stroke test with measured times is the core of that proof test.

How to fill in this template

  1. Obtain a permit and operations approval; put the valve in a safe state for testing (bypass the trip only if your procedure allows).
  2. Enter the required closing and opening times from the SIF specification (safety requirements specification).
  3. Initiate each stroke from the source shown and time it from command to limit switch change with a stopwatch or the SIS sequence of events.
  4. Record feedback and travel quality; any No makes the trial fail.
  5. Remove bypasses, return the valve to service and file the report against the SIF proof test record.

What the formulas do

  • Limit = required closing time for Close trials, required opening time for Open trials.
  • Result PASS when measured time ≤ limit and feedback and travel checks are not No.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a full stroke test of an ESD valve?

Moving the valve completely closed and open from the safety system while measuring the stroke time and checking the limit switches.

How is a full stroke test different from a partial stroke test?

A partial stroke test moves the valve about 10 to 20 % without stopping the process; it finds some failures but not seat leakage or full travel problems.

Where does the required closing time come from?

From the safety requirements specification of the SIF, based on the process safety time.
