How to Convert Absorbed Dose Units

Absorbed dose is the energy deposited by ionising radiation per unit mass of material. The SI unit is the gray (Gy = 1 J/kg); the older unit rad equals 0.01 Gy.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the gray (Gy). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in Gy.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 100 rad to gray. Using Gy = rad × 0.01: 100 rad × 0.01 = 1 Gy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of absorbed dose?

The SI unit of absorbed dose is the gray (Gy). Absorbed dose is the energy deposited by ionising radiation per unit mass of material.

How do I convert rad to Gy?

To convert rad (rad) to gray (Gy), multiply the value in rad by 0.01. For example, 1 rad = 0.01 Gy.

How do I convert Gy to rad?

To convert gray (Gy) to rad (rad), multiply the value in Gy by 100. For example, 1 Gy = 100 rad.

How do I convert mGy to mrad?

To convert milligray (mGy) to millirad (mrad), multiply the value in mGy by 100. For example, 1 mGy = 100 mrad.

Can I see a value in every absorbed dose unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 8 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
