How to Convert Equivalent Dose Units

Equivalent dose weights absorbed dose by the biological effect of the radiation type. The SI unit is the sievert (Sv); personal dosimeters read in mSv or µSv, and the older rem equals 0.01 Sv.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the sievert (Sv). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in Sv.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 100 millirem to microsievert. Using µSv = mrem × 10: 100 mrem × 10 = 1,000 µSv.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of equivalent dose?

The SI unit of equivalent dose is the sievert (Sv). Equivalent dose weights absorbed dose by the biological effect of the radiation type.

How do I convert rem to Sv?

To convert rem (rem) to sievert (Sv), multiply the value in rem by 0.01. For example, 1 rem = 0.01 Sv.

How do I convert mSv to mrem?

To convert millisievert (mSv) to millirem (mrem), multiply the value in mSv by 100. For example, 1 mSv = 100 mrem.

How do I convert µSv to mrem?

To convert microsievert (µSv) to millirem (mrem), multiply the value in µSv by 0.1. For example, 1 µSv = 0.1 mrem.

Can I see a value in every equivalent dose unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 5 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
