Flowmeter Bucket and Stopwatch Test Calculator
Check a liquid flowmeter in the field by collecting the flow in a container over a timed period, then compare the measured flow with the meter reading.
- Volume = mass ÷ density = 48.6 ÷ 998.2 = 48.688 L
- Q = V ÷ t = 2.9213 m³/h
- Error = (meter − true) ÷ true × 100 = 0.984 %
Bucket Test Formulas
Error (% of reading) = (Qmeter − Q) ÷ Q × 100
m is the collected mass, ρ the liquid density at the test temperature, V the collected volume and t the collection time. Weighing is more accurate than reading a graduated vessel. Keep the flow steady and switch the flow into and out of the container quickly.
Worked example
48.6 kg of water collected in 60 s is 48.69 L, a true flow of 2.921 m³/h. A meter reading 2.95 m³/h is +0.99 % high.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is a bucket test?
Typically 0.5 to 2 % depending on timing, scale accuracy and how steady the flow is.
Why weigh instead of measuring volume?
Scales are usually more accurate than reading the level in a vessel, and weighing avoids meniscus and foam errors.
Does it work for gas meters?
No. Gas meters need a bell prover, sonic nozzles or a reference meter.
