What is ISA-95?
ISA-95, formally ANSI/ISA-95 and internationally published as IEC 62264, is a standard developed by the International Society of Automation to define how enterprise business systems and manufacturing control systems exchange information. Its central goal is deceptively simple: making sure an ERP system and a shop floor control system, built by entirely different vendors with entirely different priorities, can still speak the same language about orders, materials, and production data.
Today more than 90 percent of manufacturers reference ISA-95 in some form, since it forms the architectural foundation nearly every modern Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is built around. The standard is deliberately vendor-agnostic and technology-agnostic, focused on activities and information exchange rather than any specific product.
Real Life Example
Imagine a company where the sales department speaks only French, the factory floor speaks only Japanese, and nobody in between can translate. Orders would get lost, production schedules would never match actual demand, and nobody could tell finance how many units actually shipped. ISA-95 is the shared dictionary and grammar that lets these very different systems, ERP speaking business terms and PLCs speaking control terms, exchange information reliably, through the MES layer acting as translator.
The Five Levels of the ISA-95 Automation Pyramid
Each level operates on a different time horizon, and that separation is exactly why ISA-95 keeps them distinct rather than merging them. Level 4 plans in months and weeks. Level 3 works in shifts, hours, and minutes. Levels 0 through 2 react in seconds and milliseconds. Merging these time scales into one system is precisely the design mistake ISA-95 was written to prevent.
The Role of Level 3: MES as the Bridge
Level 3, the Manufacturing Execution System, is where ISA-95 does its most important work. MES consolidates real-time production data flowing up from the shop floor, dispatches and tracks work orders flowing down from ERP, and manages quality, maintenance, and inventory in between. It is the layer that translates a business goal, like "produce 10,000 units this week," into the specific dispatched orders, recipes, and tracked results the shop floor actually executes.
ISA-95 defines standardized data objects and four operational domains: production, maintenance, quality, and inventory. This standardization is what allows an MES from one vendor to exchange information reliably with an ERP system from a completely different vendor, without custom, one-off integration work for every deployment.
