Amps to kW Calculator

Convert a measured current into real power in kilowatts, for example from a clamp meter reading.

Real power18.33 kW
Apparent power21.56 kVA

How this result was calculated
  1. P = √3 × V × I × pf = 18.33 kW

Amps to kW Formulas

DC: P = V × I
Single phase: P = V × I × pf
Three phase: P = √3 × VL × I × pf

Worked example

30 A at 415 V three phase, pf 0.85: P = 1.732 × 415 × 30 × 0.85 = 18.3 kW.

Key insight: a clamp meter reads current only. Without a power factor measurement, the kW figure is an estimate; a power analyser gives the true value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert amps to kW?

Multiply voltage by current and power factor, and by √3 for three phase, then divide by 1000.

How many kW is 100 A three phase?

At 415 V and pf 0.85, 100 A is about 61 kW.

What power factor should I assume?

Use 1.0 for resistive heaters, about 0.8 to 0.9 for loaded induction motors and the measured value where possible.
