kW to Amps Calculator
Convert real power in kilowatts into line current for DC, single phase or three phase circuits.
- I = P ÷ (√3 × V × pf) = 10,000 ÷ 610.98 = 16.37 A
kW to Amps Formulas
Single phase: I = P ÷ (V × pf)
Three phase: I = P ÷ (√3 × VL × pf)
P is real power in watts, V the voltage (line to line for three phase) and pf the power factor.
Worked example
10 kW at 415 V three phase with pf 0.85: I = 10,000 ÷ (1.732 × 415 × 0.85) = 16.4 A.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many amps is 1 kW?
At 230 V single phase and unity power factor, 1 kW draws 4.35 A. At 415 V three phase with pf 0.85 it draws about 1.64 A.
Why does power factor change the current?
Low power factor means more reactive current flows for the same useful power, so the line current rises as pf falls.
Should I use line or phase voltage for three phase?
Use the line to line voltage with the √3 formula, for example 415 V or 400 V.
