kVA to Amps Calculator

Find the current drawn by a load or supplied by a generator or transformer from its kVA rating.

How this result was calculated
  1. I = S ÷ (√3 × V) = 100,000 ÷ 718.8 = 139.1 A

kVA and Current Formulas

Single phase: I = S ÷ V
Three phase: I = S ÷ (√3 × VL)

S is apparent power in VA. Power factor is not needed because kVA already includes both real and reactive power.

Worked example

A 100 kVA generator at 415 V three phase: I = 100,000 ÷ (1.732 × 415) = 139.1 A per phase.

Key insight: generators and transformers are rated in kVA because their heating depends on current, whatever the power factor of the load.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many amps is 1 kVA?

At 415 V three phase, 1 kVA is 1.39 A. At 230 V single phase it is 4.35 A.

Why are transformers rated in kVA and not kW?

Losses and heating depend on voltage and current, not on the load power factor, so the rating is apparent power.

What is the full load current of a 500 kVA transformer at 433 V?

500,000 ÷ (1.732 × 433) = 667 A.
