How to Convert Electric Current Units

Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge. The ampere (A) is an SI base unit; field instruments typically signal with a current of 4 to 20 mA.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the ampere (A). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in A.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 20 milliampere to ampere. Using A = mA × 0.001: 20 mA × 0.001 = 0.02 A.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of electric current?

The SI unit of electric current is the ampere (A). Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge.

How do I convert mA to ampere?

To convert milliampere (mA) to ampere (A), multiply the value in mA by 0.001. For example, 1 mA = 0.001 A.

How do I convert ampere to mA?

To convert ampere (A) to milliampere (mA), multiply the value in ampere by 1,000. For example, 1 A = 1,000 mA.

How do I convert µA to mA?

To convert microampere (µA) to milliampere (mA), multiply the value in µA by 0.001. For example, 1 µA = 0.001 mA.

Can I see a value in every electric current unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 8 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
