How to Convert Voltage Units

Voltage (electric potential difference) is the energy per unit charge between two points. The SI unit is the volt (V = 1 W/A); instrumentation signals range from microvolts at thermocouples to kilovolts in power systems.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the volt (V). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in V.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 11 kilovolt to volt. Using V = kV × 1,000: 11 kV × 1,000 = 11,000 V.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of voltage?

The SI unit of voltage is the volt (V). Voltage (electric potential difference) is the energy per unit charge between two points.

How do I convert mV to volt?

To convert millivolt (mV) to volt (V), multiply the value in mV by 0.001. For example, 1 mV = 0.001 V.

How do I convert kV to volt?

To convert kilovolt (kV) to volt (V), multiply the value in kV by 1,000. For example, 1 kV = 1,000 V.

How do I convert µV to mV?

To convert microvolt (µV) to millivolt (mV), multiply the value in µV by 0.001. For example, 1 µV = 0.001 mV.

Can I see a value in every voltage unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 8 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
