How to Convert Electric Field Strength Units

Electric field strength is the force per unit charge at a point, equal to the voltage gradient. The SI unit is volt per metre (V/m); dielectric strength of insulation is often given in kV/mm or V/mil.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the volt per metre (V/m). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in V/m.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 20 kilovolt per millimetre to volt per mil. Using V/mil = kV/mm × 25.4: 20 kV/mm × 25.4 = 508 V/mil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SI unit of electric field strength?

The SI unit of electric field strength is the volt per metre (V/m). Electric field strength is the force per unit charge at a point, equal to the voltage gradient.

How do I convert kV/mm to V/mil?

To convert kilovolt per millimetre (kV/mm) to volt per mil (V/mil), multiply the value in kV/mm by 25.4. For example, 1 kV/mm = 25.4 V/mil.

How do I convert V/mil to kV/mm?

To convert volt per mil (V/mil) to kilovolt per millimetre (kV/mm), multiply the value in V/mil by 0.0393701. For example, 1 V/mil = 0.0393701 kV/mm.

How do I convert kV/cm to V/m?

To convert kilovolt per centimetre (kV/cm) to volt per metre (V/m), multiply the value in kV/cm by 100,000. For example, 1 kV/cm = 100,000 V/m.

Can I see a value in every electric field strength unit at once?

Yes. Enter a value and choose the source unit; the "all units" table below the converter instantly lists the equivalent in all 10 supported units. Click any row to make it the target unit.
