How to Convert Electric Resistance Units

Electric resistance opposes the flow of current (R = V / I by Ohm's law). The SI unit is the ohm (Ω); insulation resistance tests read in megohms, while contact and cable resistance is measured in milliohms.

Every unit on this page is stored as a fixed factor relative to one reference unit, the ohm (Ω). Converting is a two step multiply and divide:

  1. Multiply your value by the factor of the source unit to get the value in Ω.
  2. Divide that result by the factor of the target unit.
Value in B = Value in A × (Factor of A ÷ Factor of B)
Worked example: convert 4.7 kilohm to ohm. Using Ω = kΩ × 1,000: 4.7 kΩ × 1,000 = 4,700 Ω.
