Errors

Error % of span(reading − true) ÷ span × 100
mA error % span(I − Iexpected) ÷ 16 × 100
Error % of reading(reading − true) ÷ true × 100
Hysteresis|Rup − Rdown| ÷ span × 100
Correctiontrue − reading = −error

Uncertainty (GUM)

Combineduc = √(Σ ui²)
ExpandedU = k × uc, k = 2 ≈ 95 %
Type A (mean)u = s ÷ √n
Std deviations = √[Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (n − 1)]
TPE√(e₁² + e₂² + …)

Type B divisors

Distributionu =
Normal (certificate, k given)U ÷ k
Rectangular (spec, resolution)a ÷ √3
Triangulara ÷ √6
U shapeda ÷ √2
Display resolution r(r ÷ 2) ÷ √3

Decisions

TURtolerance ÷ U95 (aim ≥ 4:1)
Guard bandacceptance = tolerance − U
Pass|error| ≤ acceptance limit

Sensor tolerances

Type K/N class 1± 1.5 °C or 0.4 % |t|
Type K/N class 2± 2.5 °C or 0.75 % |t|

Local gravityg ≈ 9.780327 (1 + 0.0053024 sin²φ − 0.0000058 sin²2φ) − 3.086 × 10⁻⁶ h

Good practice

  • Record as found before adjusting.
  • Use traceable standards within due date.
  • Let readings settle; note ambient temperature.
  • Trend as found errors to set intervals (ILAC G24).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why divide by √3?

For a rectangular distribution of half width a, the standard deviation is a ÷ √3.

What TUR is enough?

4:1 is a common minimum; below it use guard bands or a better standard.

Is TPE the same as uncertainty?

Both combine errors by root sum of squares; uncertainty follows the GUM method with standard uncertainties.
