About this Table
AWG wire size chart for solid conductors, with diameter, cross sectional area, copper resistance and the nearest standard metric size.
Basis: ASTM B258 AWG definition: d = 0.127 × 92^((36 − n) ÷ 39) mm. Resistance uses annealed copper at 20 °C (0.017241 Ω mm²/m, IACS).
How to use
- Find the AWG size.
- Read the area in mm² and the nearest metric size.
- Use Ω/km × loop length to estimate voltage drop.
Notes
- Every 3 AWG steps roughly halves or doubles the area.
- Stranded wire has a slightly larger overall diameter than shown.
- The nearest metric size is for reference only; check current rating before substituting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 18 AWG in mm²?
0.823 mm², close to 0.75 mm².
What is 12 AWG in mm²?
3.309 mm², close to 4 mm² (often replaced by 2.5 or 4 mm²).
Does this chart give ampacity?
No. Current rating depends on insulation, installation method and temperature.
