About this Table
NEMA enclosure types chart summarising where each NEMA 250 enclosure type can be used and what it protects against.
Basis: NEMA 250 Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 V maximum). Types 7, 8, 9 and 10 cover hazardous locations and mines.
How to use
- Choose the type that covers the location (indoor or outdoor) and hazards.
- Use 4X for washdown or corrosive sites.
- Use the IP column only as a rough guide.
Notes
- A NEMA type meets or exceeds the IP shown, but an IP rating does not prove a NEMA type (NEMA also tests corrosion, icing and construction).
- Types 7 and 9 are hazardous location enclosures and need third party certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NEMA 4 and 4X?
4X adds corrosion resistance, usually stainless steel or polymer.
Is NEMA 3R waterproof?
No. It keeps out falling rain but not hose directed water.
Which NEMA type is explosion proof?
Type 7 for gases and Type 9 for dusts.
