About this Table

Boiling point altitude table showing how atmospheric pressure and the boiling point of water fall with height above sea level.

Basis: ISA standard atmosphere: P = 101.325 × (1 − 2.25577 × 10−⁵ h)^5.25588 kPa, with h in m; boiling point from IAPWS IF97 saturation line.

How to use

  1. Find the site altitude.
  2. Read the standard atmospheric pressure and boiling point.
  3. Use the boiling point for thermometer ice and boiling point checks at site.

Notes

  • Weather changes local pressure by a few kPa; use a barometer for calibration work.
  • Altitude also affects gauge pressure instruments referenced to atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperature does water boil at 1000 m?

About 96.6 °C.

What is air pressure at 2000 m?

About 79.5 kPa.

Why use this for calibration?

A boiling point check must use the local boiling temperature, not 100 °C.
