About this Table
Thermocouple tolerance table showing the permitted deviation of new thermocouple wire for each type and tolerance class, with the limit worked out at common temperatures.
Basis: IEC 60584 1:2013 tolerance classes. The tolerance is the larger of the fixed value and the percentage of |t| within each range. |t| is the temperature in °C without sign.
How to use
- Find your thermocouple type and class (usually printed on the datasheet or sensor tag).
- Pick the row that covers your measuring temperature.
- For percentage rows multiply by the temperature: class 1 type K at 800 °C is ± 0.004 × 800 = ± 3.2 °C.
Notes
- Tolerances apply to new wire as supplied. Drift in service is extra.
- ANSI MC96.1 'special limits' are close to IEC class 1 and 'standard limits' close to class 2.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the tolerance of a class 1 type K thermocouple?
± 1.5 °C from −40 to 375 °C and ± 0.4 % of |t| from 375 to 1000 °C.
Which class is better, 1 or 2?
Class 1 is tighter. Class 2 is the common standard grade.
Does the tolerance include the transmitter?
No. Add the transmitter and cold junction errors separately.
