About this Table

IP rating chart explaining the two digits of the ingress protection code and where common ratings are used in plants.

Basis: IEC 60529 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code). IP69K is defined in ISO 20653 for road vehicles and widely used in food plants.

How to use

  1. Read the first digit for dust and solids.
  2. Read the second digit for water.
  3. An X means not tested for that part, for example IPX7.

Notes

  • A higher second digit is not always better: IPX7 immersion does not prove resistance to jets (IPX5, IPX6).
  • IP ratings do not cover corrosion, ice or hazardous areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IP65 mean?

Dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction.

Is IP67 better than IP66?

Not always. IP67 is tested for immersion; IP66 for powerful jets. Many instruments carry both.

What is IP68?

Continuous immersion under conditions stated by the maker, beyond 1 m.
