About this Table

NEMA to IP conversion chart showing the IP rating each NEMA enclosure type meets or exceeds.

Basis: NEMA 250 Annex comparison with IEC 60529. The comparison is one way: NEMA type to IP code.

How to use

  1. Find the NEMA type on the enclosure.
  2. Read the IP code it meets or exceeds.
  3. Do not convert IP to NEMA: IP tests do not cover corrosion, icing or gasket ageing.

Notes

  • Hazardous location types 7 to 10 have no IP equivalent.
  • NEMA's own comparison is more conservative for some types (for example IP56 for Type 4 and 4X); many makers test 4X enclosures to IP66.

Frequently Asked Questions

What IP is NEMA 4X?

It meets or exceeds IP66.

What IP is NEMA 12?

It meets or exceeds IP54.

Can I use an IP66 box where NEMA 4X is specified?

Not automatically. NEMA 4X also requires corrosion and other tests.
