About the Cable Continuity and Loop Resistance Test Record

Continuity tests prove each core is connected end to end and correctly identified. Comparing the loop resistance with the expected copper value also finds loose terminals and wrong cable sizes.

How to fill in this template

  1. Enter length and conductor size for each pair from the cable schedule.
  2. Short the pair at the far end.
  3. Measure loop resistance at the near end.
  4. Compare with the expected value; high readings point to loose or wrong terminations.
  5. Remove shorts and restore terminations.

What the formulas do

  • Expected loop resistance = 2 × length × 0.0172 ÷ cross section (Ω).
  • PASS if measured ≤ expected × (1 + allowed excess).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why compare with an expected value?

A loose or corroded terminal adds resistance that a simple beep test misses.

Does temperature matter?

Copper resistance rises about 0.4 % per °C; the allowed excess covers normal ambient variation.

How do I check core identity?

Short one pair at a time and confirm which pair reads low at the other end.
