About the Gas Detector Calibration Record
Gas detectors drift and their sensors age or get poisoned. Recording as found bump test results shows whether detectors were working in service, and as left results prove the calibration. The record also tracks test gas cylinders for traceability.
How to fill in this template
- Set the acceptance tolerance and calibration interval from your gas detection procedure.
- For each detector enter the test gas concentration and cylinder number.
- Record the as found reading (bump test) before adjustment, then the as left reading after calibration.
- Results and next due dates are calculated.
- Investigate bump test failures: the detector might not have alarmed correctly in service.
What the formulas do
- Error % = (reading − test gas) ÷ test gas × 100.
- PASS if |error| ≤ tolerance.
- Next due = date + interval.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tolerance is acceptable for a bump test?
Many sites use about ± 10 to 20 % of the applied concentration for bump tests; follow the manufacturer and site procedure.
Why record the cylinder number?
It traces each calibration to a certified test gas, needed for audits.
How often should gas detectors be calibrated?
Commonly every 3 to 6 months, with more frequent bump tests; set by the manufacturer, the standard and site experience.
