About the Temperature Element and Transmitter Data Sheet

A temperature measurement is only as good as its weakest part: an element of the wrong class, a thermowell that is too short or that vibrates in high velocity flow, or a transmitter that fails the wrong way on sensor break. Specifying the element, well and transmitter together avoids these problems.

How to fill in this template

  1. Enter process conditions, including fluid velocity, which is needed for the thermowell calculation.
  2. Choose the element type, tolerance class and number of wires (4 wire for best RTD accuracy).
  3. Specify thermowell type, connection, material and dimensions; request the wake frequency calculation.
  4. Specify the transmitter range, output and burnout direction so a sensor failure drives the loop safe.
  5. Issue with the requisition for vendor completion.

Frequently Asked Questions

RTD or thermocouple?

RTDs (Pt100) are more accurate and stable up to about 600 °C; thermocouples cover higher temperatures and respond faster but are less accurate.

Why is a wake frequency calculation needed?

Flow past a thermowell sheds vortices. If their frequency approaches the well natural frequency, the well can vibrate and fail. ASME PTC 19.3 TW defines the check.

What is burnout direction?

The output the transmitter drives to when the sensor fails: upscale (high) or downscale (low), chosen so the control or trip action is safe.
