About the Instrument Maintenance Log

A simple maintenance log builds the history needed for root cause analysis, spare parts planning and calibration interval decisions, even where a CMMS exists.

How to fill in this template

  1. Add one row per job with tag and work type.
  2. Describe problem, cause and action briefly.
  3. Record hours and parts.
  4. Keep status up to date.
  5. Review totals monthly: a high breakdown share signals weak preventive maintenance.

What the formulas do

  • Totals count jobs by work type and sum hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why log cause separately from action?

Causes reveal repeat problems; actions alone do not.

What breakdown share is good?

Lower is better; many plants aim for most hours on planned work.

Can this replace a CMMS?

For small sites yes; otherwise use it as a shift summary.
