About the Pressure Relief Valve Bench Test Record

Relief valves are tested at intervals to prove they lift at their set pressure and reseat tightly. The as found result matters most: it shows whether the valve would have protected the equipment since the last test, and drives the test interval.

How to fill in this template

  1. Enter the test bench, medium and test interval.
  2. For each valve record the set pressure from the nameplate and the as found pop pressure before any adjustment.
  3. Adjust if needed and record the as left pop and reseat pressure, and whether the seat is tight.
  4. Results show PASS or FAIL against the tolerance; the next due date follows from the interval.
  5. As found failures should be reported: they show the valve would not have protected the equipment as intended.

What the formulas do

  • Tolerance = ± 0.138 bar for set ≤ 4.83 bar g, otherwise ± 3 % of set.
  • Result = PASS if |pop − set| ≤ tolerance.
  • Next due = test date + interval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the set pressure tolerance of a relief valve?

Under ASME Section VIII, ± 2 psi up to 70 psi set pressure and ± 3 % above. Other codes may differ.

Why record the as found pop pressure?

It shows how the valve performed in service. A high as found result means the equipment was less protected than designed.

What is reseat pressure?

The pressure at which the valve closes again after lifting; it is lower than the set pressure by the blowdown.
