About the Control Valve Data Sheet
Control valves are the most expensive and most often mis sized instruments in a plant. A data sheet with the full range of process conditions, and a quick check of the Cv ratio at minimum and maximum flow, catches oversized and undersized valves before they are ordered.
How to fill in this template
- Enter minimum, normal and maximum process conditions; valve sizing needs all three.
- Calculate the required Cv at each flow (use the control valve Cv calculator) and type the values.
- Enter the rated Cv of the selected valve; the Cv ratios are calculated automatically.
- Specify body, trim, leakage class and actuator, including the fail action required by the process.
- Issue with the requisition; the vendor confirms the sizing and noise calculations.
What the formulas do
- Cv ratio at maximum flow = required Cv (max) ÷ rated Cv.
- Cv ratio at minimum flow = required Cv (min) ÷ rated Cv.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a control valve data sheet include?
Process conditions at minimum, normal and maximum flow, required and rated Cv, body and trim details, leakage class, actuator, fail action and accessories.
What is a good Cv ratio for a control valve?
Roughly 0.1 to 0.85 of rated Cv across the flow range, so the valve controls between about 10 and 85 % open depending on characteristic.
What does leakage class IV mean?
Per FCI 70 2, maximum seat leakage of 0.01 % of rated capacity, typical for metal seated globe valves.
