About the Pressure Transmitter Calibration Report

A pressure transmitter calibration report is the record that proves a transmitter measures within its stated accuracy. Auditors under ISO 9001 and plant quality systems expect to see the as found condition (how the instrument arrived), the as left condition (after adjustment), the reference standard used and its traceability. This format follows the common 5 point upscale and downscale method, which also reveals hysteresis and nonlinearity.

How to fill in this template

  1. Fill in the instrument details. LRV, URV and tolerance drive every calculation, so enter them first.
  2. Record the pressure standard, its certificate number and validity. Never use a standard past its due date.
  3. Apply pressure at each test point shown in the Applied pressure column, upscale then downscale, and type the transmitter output in As found output (mA).
  4. If any point fails, adjust the transmitter (zero and span or sensor trim) and repeat the test, entering the readings in As left output (mA).
  5. Check the overall result, add remarks, then sign and date the report.

What the formulas do

  • Applied pressure = LRV + (URV − LRV) × test point % ÷ 100.
  • Expected output = 4 + 16 × test point % ÷ 100 mA.
  • Error (% of span) = (measured mA − expected mA) ÷ 16 × 100.
  • Result is PASS when the absolute error is within the tolerance you entered.
  • Overall result uses the as left readings if you adjusted the transmitter, otherwise the as found readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is as found and as left in calibration?

As found is the reading before any adjustment and shows how far the instrument drifted. As left is the reading after adjustment. Both must be recorded so drift can be tracked and the calibration interval reviewed.

How many points are used to calibrate a pressure transmitter?

Five points (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 % of span) is standard, checked upscale and downscale. Critical or SIS transmitters may use more points.

What tolerance should I use?

Use the plant or loop requirement, often ± 0.25 % to ± 0.5 % of span for transmitters. It must not be tighter than the transmitter plus the test equipment can achieve.
