About the Instrument Material Take Off (MTO)

Instrument bulk materials are bought long before installation, from hook up drawings rather than finished installations. A clear MTO avoids both shortages that stop work on site and expensive surplus at the end of the project.

How to fill in this template

  1. List each bulk item once, with a full specification so the buyer can order without questions.
  2. Count the quantity used in one hook up of each type from the hook up drawing.
  3. Enter how many instruments use that hook up.
  4. Set a wastage percentage for cut items such as tube and cable.
  5. Order quantity rounds up automatically.

What the formulas do

  • Total = quantity per hook up × number of hook ups.
  • Order quantity = ROUNDUP(total × (1 + wastage % ÷ 100)).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MTO in instrumentation?

A material take off: a list of all bulk materials needed for instrument installation, calculated from hook up drawings and quantities.

How much wastage should I add to tubing?

Typically 5 to 10 % for tube and cable; fittings and valves are usually ordered exactly or with a small spare.

Where do hook up quantities come from?

From the bill of materials on each standard hook up drawing.
